Mall History: How It Grew
Woodland Mall first opened its doors in March 1968. It was built at a busy intersection in Kentwood. When it first opened, the main stores were Sears and JCPenney. A smaller store called Kresge was also part of the mall.
Early Expansions and Changes
In 1975, Woodland Mall got bigger. A new section was added, bringing a third main store, Hudson's. This made the mall even more popular. In 1987, the Kresge store closed. Its space was then divided into smaller shops.
In the late 1990s, the mall had many updates. New flooring and lighting were added. The entrances were also made to look more modern. A food court called "Cafes in the Woods" opened in 1999. A play area for kids was also built.
New Competition and Store Changes
Around 1999, a new mall opened nearby. This was RiverTown Crossings in Grandville. It was the first big competitor for Woodland Mall. Before this, Woodland was the largest mall in the Grand Rapids area.
The Hudson's store changed its name in 2001 to Marshall Field's. Then, in 2006, it became Macy's. Also in 2006, a 14-screen movie theater opened. Two restaurants, Red Robin and On the Border, were added too. A company called Celebration Cinema later bought the movie theater.
Recent Updates and New Stores
In 2008, Barnes & Noble announced it would move into the mall. Their new two-story bookstore opened in October 2009. In 2013, H&M opened its first store in Michigan outside of the Detroit area at Woodland Mall.
In 2017, the Sears store closed. The building was taken down in 2018 to make way for a big expansion. This plan included adding 10-15 new shops. A new main store, Von Maur, opened in October 2019. The Apple Store also moved to a new, larger space. The mall also updated its parking lots and outside look.
In May 2020, Celebration Cinema announced that its movie theater at Woodland Mall would close permanently.
