The Woodruff Arts Center is a big place in Atlanta, Georgia, where you can enjoy many kinds of art. It's home to three main arts groups: the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the High Museum of Art. It first opened its doors in 1968.

A Special History

The Woodruff Arts Center has a very important story. In 1962, something sad happened in Atlanta. Many leaders from the city's arts community were on a plane that crashed in Paris. This was a huge loss for Atlanta.

But the city decided to turn this sadness into something positive. They wanted to build a special memorial to honor those who were lost. This idea led to the creation of the Atlanta Arts Alliance.

The center first opened on October 5, 1968. It was called the Memorial Arts Center back then. A local architect from Atlanta, Joe Amisano, designed the building.

Growing Over Time

In 1982, the center was renamed the Woodruff Arts Center. This was to honor Robert W. Woodruff, who was a very generous supporter. At first, the center included the Atlanta College of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the High Museum of Art.

In 1970, the Alliance Theatre joined the center. Later, in 2005, Young Audiences became part of the Woodruff. This addition helped the center reach over one million children each year with its programs. This is the largest number for any arts center in the country!

New Buildings and Design

The Woodruff campus grew in 1983 with a new building for the High Museum of Art. This building was designed by Richard Meier. He was the youngest architect at that time to win the Pritzker Prize, a very famous award for architects.

In 2005, the Woodruff Arts Center had its biggest expansion since it first opened. They added two new exhibit buildings and a new office building for the High Museum. There was also a place for students to live and a sculpture studio.

A new restaurant, Table 1280, and a public plaza were also added. This new "village for the arts" was designed by another Pritzker Prize winner, Renzo Piano from Italy.

What You'll Find There

The Woodruff campus covers about 12 acres of land. It has a lot of space for art shows, learning, and performances. There's also a large parking garage under the buildings.

The Woodruff Arts Center is home to some amazing groups:

  • The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which has won a Grammy Award for its music.
  • The Alliance Theatre, which has won a Tony Award for its plays.
  • The High Museum of Art, where you can see many beautiful artworks.
