Richard Meier, born on October 12, 1934, is a famous American architect. He is known for his unique building designs that often use geometric shapes and are mostly white. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1984, which is like a Nobel Prize for architects. Some of his most well-known buildings include the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

Early Life and Education

Richard Meier grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. He was the oldest of three sons in his family. He went to Columbia High School. After high school, he studied architecture at Cornell University and earned his degree in 1957.

After finishing college, Meier traveled a lot. He visited countries like Denmark, France, Germany, and Italy. This helped him meet other architects and learn about different building styles. He is also a second cousin to another architect named Peter Eisenman.

Richard Meier's Career

In 1959, Richard Meier started working in New York City. He worked for a few different architecture firms before opening his own company in 1963.

In 1972, he became part of a group called "The New York Five." This group included five modern architects who shared similar ideas about design. Early in his career, Meier often worked with artists. He liked to design buildings that were white and had clear geometric shapes.

Meier first became famous for designing different houses. He also designed The Atheneum, a visitors' center in Indiana, which was finished in 1979. Another important early project was the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, completed in 1983.

One of Meier's most recognized designs is the Getty Center in Los Angeles. This large museum complex was finished in 1997. It brought him a lot of attention. Other major projects from this time include the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art in Spain (1995) and The Hague City Hall in the Netherlands (1995). He also designed the San Jose City Hall (2005).

Today, Meier's company, MeierPartners, has offices in New York and Los Angeles. They work on projects all over the world, from China to Paris.

Much of Meier's work is inspired by earlier architects, especially Le Corbusier. Meier is known for taking Le Corbusier's ideas and expanding on them. His designs also show influences from architects like Mies Van der Rohe. The color white is a key part of his designs, just as it has been used in many famous buildings throughout history.

Awards and Recognition

In 1984, Richard Meier received the Pritzker Prize. The judges said that his buildings were "personal, vigorous, original." This is a very high honor in architecture. In 1997, he also won the AIA Gold Medal.

In 2014, Meier opened a large exhibition space in Jersey City. This space brings together many of his life's works. It includes his sculptures, architectural drawings, and collages. It also has a research library for people to learn more about his work.
