A Brief History of Woodsboro
Woodsboro started as a land project in 1906. Two developers, W. C. Johnson and George P. Pugh, planned the town. It was first called "Church" because it was near a railway stop with that name.
How Woodsboro Got Its Name
In 1907, a post office opened in the town's first building, a wooden hotel. The town's name was then changed to Woodsboro. It was named after Captain Tobias D. Wood, who sold the land to the developers.
Early Growth and Development
The developers advertised the surrounding farmlands, attracting many new settlers. By 1908, Woodsboro had grown to include about 25 buildings. These included the hotel, a cotton gin, a lumberyard, and homes. A school was also started around this time.
In 1912, a bank branch opened in Woodsboro. By 1913, the town began to get electricity and lights. By 1914, about 500 people lived in Woodsboro. A group of local business people, called the Commercial Club, worked to improve the town. They helped set up the town's first water system. Woodsboro officially became an incorporated town in 1928.
Woodsboro During the Oil Boom
After 1928, oil was discovered nearby, which caused Woodsboro to grow quickly. Many construction and oilfield workers moved to the area. The town's population jumped to 1,286 by 1930. Even though the Great Depression affected the town in the early 1930s, oil activity picked up again later. By 1941, Woodsboro had 35 businesses and 1,426 people.
The oil and gas industry helped the town's economy for many years. However, oil production slowed down in the 1980s. The population of Woodsboro reached its highest point of 2,081 in 1960. It then slowly decreased to 1,731 residents by 1990.
