History of Woodville
Woodville got its name because it was a place where wood was often shipped out. This means it was an important spot for moving wood from one place to another. The state government of Georgia officially made Woodville a city in 1911.
Where is Woodville?
Woodville is in the northeast part of Greene County. It is located along Georgia State Route 77, also known as Dogwood Road. The city is about 4.5 miles north of Union Point. It is also about 8 miles south of Maxeys.
Greensboro, which is the main city in Greene County, is about 9 miles southwest of Woodville. The total area of Woodville is about 4.9 square miles (12.7 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area is water.

A Notable Figure
Woodville was once home to Major Robert McWhorter. He was a soldier in the Confederate Army. After the war, he became a politician. He represented Greene County in the Georgia General Assembly. This is like the state's parliament or congress.
McWhorter served in the General Assembly for many years, from 1847 to 1884. He is known for being the first Republican Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. He held this important position from 1868 to 1870. This was during a time called the Reconstruction era, after the Civil War. Major McWhorter is buried in the Woodville Cemetery.
