The Story of Worden
Worden wasn't always called Worden! When it was first planned in 1860, its name was "New Hampton."
About ten years later, in 1870, a railroad line was built through the area. The train station was named "Worden" after John C. Worden. He was an English immigrant, a successful businessman, and someone who helped make railroads happen.
Where is Worden?
Worden is in the northern part of Madison County, Illinois. It's about 3 miles (5 km) north of Hamel, another small town.
If you travel about 20 miles (32 km) east, you'll find Alton, Illinois. The big city of St. Louis is about 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Worden.
The village covers about 0.72 square miles (1.88 square kilometers) of land. A very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water. The water flows into small streams that eventually lead to Cahokia Creek. This creek then flows into the mighty Mississippi River.
