World Food Council facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The World Food Council (WFC) was a special group that was part of the United Nations. It was created in December 1974 after a big meeting called the World Food Conference. The main office of the WFC was in Rome, Italy.

The WFC's main goal was to help different countries work together to fight against malnutrition (not getting enough good food) and hunger. It tried to connect the agriculture ministries (government departments that deal with farming and food) from various nations. The World Food Council officially stopped its work in 1993. It is one of the very few United Nations groups that has ever been closed down. Its jobs were then taken over by other UN organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme.

What Was the World Food Council?

The World Food Council, or WFC, was set up to be a leader and helper for countries around the world. Its main purpose was to make sure that people had enough food to eat and that fewer people suffered from hunger. It worked like a central point where countries could share ideas and plans to improve food supplies.

Why Was It Created?

The WFC was created because there was a big problem with hunger and not enough food in many parts of the world in the 1970s. Leaders from different countries met at the World Food Conference. They realized they needed a special group to focus only on food issues and help coordinate efforts globally. This led to the creation of the WFC by the UN General Assembly.

What Did It Do?

The WFC worked to bring together different national governments. It helped them plan and share ways to grow more food and make sure it reached everyone. The WFC also tried to get more money and support for projects that fought hunger. It aimed to be a voice for people who were suffering from a lack of food.

Why Did It Stop?

The World Food Council was closed down in 1993. This happened because some of its jobs and goals were similar to those of other United Nations groups. To make things simpler and more efficient, its responsibilities were given to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP). These two organizations continued the important work of fighting hunger and improving food security worldwide.
