What Happened at Worms?

The massacre at Worms was one of many attacks against Jewish communities. These attacks happened during the First Crusade, which lasted from 1096 to 1099.

Count Emicho and his followers arrived in Worms on May 18, 1096. Soon after they got there, a false rumor started spreading. The rumor claimed that Jewish people had killed a Christian. It also said they had poisoned the town's wells.

The Attack Begins

Local people in Worms then joined forces with Count Emicho's group. Together, they launched a fierce attack on the Jewish community. Many Jewish people tried to find safety in the palace of Bishop Adalbert. However, some chose to stay outside the palace walls.

After eight days, Emicho's army broke into the palace. They were helped by the local townspeople, called burghers. Those who had sought safety inside were killed. At that moment, the Jewish people were praying the Hallel prayer. They were celebrating Rosh Chodesh Sivan, a special day in their calendar.
