What is the Cutlers' Company?
The story of the Cutlers' Company began in the 1200s. Back then, it was a group for people who made and fixed knives. They received a special permission document called a Royal Charter in 1416. This charter made them an official company.
Over time, most knife-making moved away from London to a city called Sheffield. There, a similar group, the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, was formed. Because of this, the London Cutlers' Company doesn't focus on making knives anymore.
What They Do Today
Today, the Worshipful Company of Cutlers mainly works as a charity. They help people and support good causes. A big part of what they do is fund and manage different educational projects. This includes giving out scholarships and awards to help young people learn and succeed.
Their Symbols and Motto
Every old company has its own special symbols, called a coat of arms. The Cutlers of London have a coat of arms that shows three pairs of swords. They also have a crest, which is a symbol placed above the shield. Their crest features an elephant carrying a castle. The Company's supporters (the figures holding up the shield) are two elephants.
The Company's motto is Pour parvenir a bonne foy. This is an old French phrase that means To succeed through good faith. It reminds them to always act honestly and with good intentions.
Their Special Building
The Cutlers' Company has its own special building called a livery hall. It's located in Warwick Lane, near Newgate Street in London. The building was designed by T. Tayler Smith and opened in 1888.
It's a brick building with cool decorations on the outside. There's a special art piece called a terracotta frieze that shows how knives were made. This artwork was created by a sculptor named Benjamin Creswick, who used to work as a knife-grinder himself!
