Wostok (which means "East" in Russian) is a very small community, known as a hamlet, located in Alberta, Canada. It is part of Lamont County. You can find Wostok on Range Road 173. It's about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of Highway 45 and 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Highway 29. The town of Lamont is also nearby, about 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Wostok.
History of Wostok
Wostok has an interesting past! It was founded in 1892 by farmers who moved there from parts of Eastern Europe. These areas were called Galicia and Bukovina, and they were part of a country known as Austria-Hungary at the time. These new settlers came to Canada to build new lives and farm the land.
Population of Wostok
Even though Wostok is a very small place, we know how many people lived there at one point. In the 1991 Census, which is like a big count of all the people in Canada, Wostok had a population of 15 people. This count was done by Statistics Canada, the country's official data agency.
