Wugularr (pronounced: woo-gah-larr) is a small community in Australia's Northern Territory. It used to be called Beswick. This special place is about 116 kilometers (72 miles) south-east of Katherine. It's also 31 kilometers (19 miles) from the Barunga Community. In August 2024, the community was officially renamed Wugularr. The Bagala (Jawoyn) people, who are the traditional owners of this land, asked for the name change.
About Wugularr
What's in a Name?
The name Wugularr comes from the Jawoyn language. It describes the land where the community is located. The older name, Beswick, came from a large farm called 'Beswick Station'. This farm used to be on the land where the community now stands.
A Plane's Adventure
In 1947, a DC-3 plane, also known as a Dakota, had to make an emergency landing. This plane belonged to the Dutch Air Force. It landed near the area that was then called Beswick. Luckily, everyone on board survived the landing.
Four of the crew members then walked about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to get help. They followed the Katherine River to find their way. After a long journey, they ran out of food. They had two dogs with them and had to use one for food to survive. Eventually, the plane's wings were taken off. The rest of the plane was then pulled all the way to Katherine.
Wugularr on Screen and in Books
The Wugularr community has shared its stories with the world. Books have been published that tell local tales from the area. In 2021, a children's television show was filmed right there. This show, called Barrumbi Kids, was made for NITV. It helps share the culture and life of the community with young viewers.
