Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Wulili were an Indigenous Australian people. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia.

Wulili Language

The language spoken by the Wulili people is called Wulili. Experts believe it was a dialect of the Wagawaga language. A researcher named Nils Holmer studied the small amount of information that was saved about their language.

Traditional Lands

Norman Tindale, a well-known researcher, described the traditional lands of the Wulili. Their country covered about 3,200 square miles (8,300 km²). This area included the beginnings of the Auburn River and Redbank Creek. It stretched north towards Walloon and Camboon. Their lands also reached the ranges east of the Dawson River. Their eastern border was near Eidsvold.

Wulili History

Camboon Station was a large farm that hired many Wulili people. The State Library of Queensland keeps records from Camboon Station. These records show the daily activities of the farm. They also list the Wulili people who worked there. They worked as drovers, stockmen, shepherds, and general farmhands. Some Wulili people also worked as domestic servants in homes.

Years later, in 1926, a researcher named John Mathew was able to collect samples of the Wulili language. He learned this language from people who spoke it. This showed that the Wulili people and their culture continued to thrive.
