The Story of Starbar
How Starbar Began
The Starbar first came out in 1976. When it launched, there was a cool TV ad with a space theme. The ad's catchy phrase was "...next time you're having an energy crisis." Later, the bar was advertised as "the munchiest bar ever."
In the mid-1980s, people in the UK could get special goodies. If you sent in three Starbar wrappers and some money for postage, you could get a Starbar ruler, a pencil, and a copy of a book. The book was called The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams.
Name Changes and New Places
For a short time in 1989, the Starbar was called a peanut version of the Boost bar. But by 1994, it went back to being called Starbar. This time, "Starbar" was written as one word.
In Canada and Germany, the chocolate bar is still called Wunderbar. It's made by Cadbury Adams under a special agreement with Cadbury UK. You can even find "minis" versions of Wunderbar. These are small, bite-sized pieces. They also come in a tiny 12-gram size, which is popular for Halloween.
Since 2012, Starbars have also been sold in countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. These bars are made by a company called Marabou Sweden. Marabou is part of Mondelēz International, which also owns Cadbury.
Starbar was also sold in Australia starting in November 2012. Those bars were made in Ireland. However, Starbar is no longer available in Australia. It's not listed on the Cadbury Australia website anymore.
