The Story of Wuzetka
This tasty cake likely appeared around the late 1940s or early 1950s. It was created in one of the new sweet shops in Warsaw. The exact reason for its name is a bit of a mystery, and people have different ideas.
How Wuzetka Got Its Name
Many historians and sources agree that the cake was probably named after the Warsaw W-Z Route. This was a big road that went from East to West, and the sweet shop was right next to it.
Other ideas for the name include:
- It might come from the letters "WZC." This could stand for "Warsaw Confectionery Plants" (Warszawskie Zakłady Cukiernicze).
- It could also mean "pastry with chocolate" (wypiek z czekoladą) in Polish.
- Another idea is "WZK," which means "pastry with cream" (wypiek z kremem).
The sweet shop where Wuzetka was first sold was probably located near the "Kino Muranów" cinema building. This cinema is at 5 Andersa Street, in the Muranów area of Warsaw.
How to Make Wuzetka
Wuzetka has two square layers of chocolate cake. These layers are made from wheat flour, eggs, sugar, and cocoa.
Baking the Cake Layers
First, the cake mixture is baked in an oven. It cooks at 180 degrees Celsius (which is 356 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 20 to 30 minutes. Once the layers are baked, they are dipped and soaked in a sweet drink called punch.
Adding the Fillings and Toppings
The top cake layer gets a thin spread of marmalade or jam. After that, a thick layer of chocolate pomade is added. Pomade is a type of smooth, sweet chocolate coating.
The creamy filling for the middle of the cake is made from:
- 36% whipping cream
- Powdered sugar
- Gelatin (which helps the cream stay firm)
Finally, Wuzetka is usually topped with a pretty swirl of whipped cream.
