X-wing facts for kids
The X-wing is a famous spaceship from the Star Wars movies. It's a type of fighter jet used in space. You can see it in the first three Star Wars films, called the original trilogy. This cool ship also appears in many books, games, and toys. It is known as the main starfighter for the Rebel Alliance and later for the New Republic.
How the X-wing Was Made
The X-wing was first designed for the movie Star Wars: A New Hope. A special effects company called Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) created it. Joe Johnston drew the first ideas for the ship. Then, Colin Cantwell made models that helped create the final X-wing design.
ILM built small models of the X-wing in different sizes. These models had special marks on their wings. These marks showed which pilot each model belonged to in the movie. Each X-wing model was built with a hollow space inside. This space held parts for cool effects, like lights.
Besides the small models, the movie crew also built one full-size X-wing. This big model was used for scenes in the Rebels' base on Yavin IV. They used clever editing and cardboard cutouts. This made it look like there were many X-wing fighters in the hangar. The crew also made a full-size cockpit for the X-wing. All the actors sat in this cockpit. The little droid behind each actor was changed for different pilots.
X-wing in the Star Wars Story
In the Star Wars story, a company called Incom Corporation designed the X-wing. This company left the Galactic Empire and gave the X-wing plans to the Rebel Alliance. The X-wing is a one-person starfighter. It also has a special spot for a helpful droid.
This starfighter has four powerful laser cannons. It also has two launchers for proton torpedoes. Its four wings are called s-foils. These wings can fold open or closed. The X-wing has four engines, making it very fast. It can even travel through hyperspace to reach distant stars quickly. For defense, it has strong energy shields.
