The Galactic Empire is a powerful government that rules the Star Wars galaxy. It is the main group of bad guys in the first three Star Wars movies. The Empire is led by Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, and his strong helper, Darth Vader.
The Empire controls the galaxy by making people afraid and using a lot of force. It is a government that tries to control every part of people's lives. It uses its huge army to stop or silence anyone who disagrees with its rules.

How the Empire Began
The Galactic Empire was formed when Darth Sidious took over the Galactic Republic. This happened after a big war called the Clone Wars. Before the war, many planets left the Republic to form their own group called the Separatists.
People in the Republic were scared of the Separatists. So, they gave special powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. He was well-liked and seemed like a strong leader. By the end of the war, Palpatine, who was secretly Darth Sidious, could make almost any law he wanted.
The only ones who could stop him were the Jedi. The Jedi were an ancient group of knights who promised to protect the Republic. They tried to arrest Palpatine, but they failed. Palpatine used this as an excuse to create a new government with much more security. He changed the Republic into the Empire and made himself the Emperor.
Life Under the Empire
The Empire caused a lot of suffering. It harmed many people and alien species. Paying for its massive military made many parts of the galaxy poor. The Empire took away almost all the freedoms and rights people had before. There was also a lot of unfairness and bad behavior within the government. Life was so hard that some of the Empire's own leaders tried to speak up, but they were threatened.
Because of this, many people and aliens joined a group called the Rebel Alliance. Their goal was to destroy the Empire and bring back a fair government.
The Empire's End and New Threats
After the deaths of both Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, and a big battle called the Battle of Jakku, the Empire gave up to the Rebel Alliance. The Rebels then created a new, peaceful government called the New Republic.
Even though the Empire surrendered, some of its surviving leaders created a new military group. This group was based on the old Empire and was called the First Order. They secretly rebuilt their power. They bought weapons and spaceships from greedy traders and took over planets rich in resources. They also took many babies and forced them to become stormtroopers.
The First Order secretly built a superweapon called Starkiller Base. They used this weapon to destroy the capital of the New Republic, Hosnian Prime. Now that the New Republic is gone, the First Order wants to bring back the Galactic Empire.
