Coruscant is a fictional planet in the Star Wars universe. It is an ecumenopolis, which means it's a planet completely covered by one giant city. Imagine a city so big it takes up an entire world!

Coruscant was first mentioned in a 1991 Star Wars novel called Heir to the Empire. It later appeared on screen in the 1997 special edition of Return of the Jedi. Since then, it has become a very important place in the Star Wars stories.

In the Star Wars universe, Coruscant is super important. It served as the capital for both the Republic and the Empire. It was also the main base for the Jedi Order. The planet is always busy and has many layers, like a giant skyscraper. Over hundreds of years, new city blocks were built on top of older ones. Coruscant has 5127 levels, with the top level being the richest and the bottom level being the poorest.

Coruscant has four moons and is the sixth planet in its star system. Its sun is called Coruscant Prime. The planet's main city was known as Galactic City, and later Republic City under the Galactic Republic. During the Clone Wars, it was sometimes called Triple Zero.

What's in a Name?

In the Star Wars universe, the name Coruscant comes from a rare and shiny gem called the corusca gem. From space, the planet's bright city lights were said to look like these glittering gems.

In the real world, the word "coruscant" comes from an old Latin word meaning "vibrating" or "glittering." It's a poetic word that means "sparkling" or "shining brightly."

How Coruscant Was Created

The idea of a planet-sized city in Star Wars started with George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. In his early ideas for the first movie, he imagined a planet called Alderaan as a city-planet and the capital of the galaxy.

Early drawings for this city-planet showed it as a floating city in the clouds. This idea later inspired Cloud City, which you see in The Empire Strikes Back.

Later, for Return of the Jedi, Lucas thought about an Imperial homeworld called Had Abbadon, which would also be a giant city. But it was too difficult to create on screen at the time, so the idea was put aside.

The Empire's homeworld first appeared in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (which are stories outside the main movies). It was called Coruscant for the first time in Timothy Zahn's novel Heir to the Empire.

Designing the City Planet

When they made The Phantom Menace, they decided to show Coruscant on screen. Artist Doug Chiang designed the city. He looked at the early drawings by Ralph McQuarrie for inspiration. The city looks like a "retro-futuristic metropolis," with streams of flying vehicles moving between tall skyscrapers. This look might have been inspired by the 1927 movie Metropolis.

For Attack of the Clones, Coruscant was shown in even more detail. Doug Chiang made the lower levels of the city look more crowded and gritty, taking ideas from the 1982 movie Blade Runner.
