The Xallas River is a river located in Galicia, Spain. It begins from smaller streams that join together in the mountains. This river is quite unique because it is one of the few rivers in Europe that flows directly into the ocean as a waterfall.

Journey of the Xallas River

The Xallas River starts its journey high up in the mountains. Its source is near a place called Monte Castelo in Coristanco. From there, it flows for about 57 kilometers (around 35 miles).

Passing Through Towns and Lakes

As the Xallas River travels, it passes close to the town of Santa Comba. Along its path, the river flows through several artificial lakes. These lakes are created by dams built across the river. Some of these lakes include Fervenza, Ponte Olveira, Castrelo, and Santa Uxía. These dams help control the river's water and are often used to generate electricity.

Reaching the Atlantic Ocean

The Xallas River eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It flows into the ocean near a town called Ézaro. Here, the river forms a beautiful waterfall, which is a popular sight. This waterfall is known as the Ézaro Waterfall. It's a rare example of a river flowing directly into the sea as a cascade.
