Xan Phillips facts for kids
Xan Forest Phillips is an American poet and artist. He grew up in the countryside of Ohio.
Learning and College
Xan Phillips went to Oberlin College. He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts in 2014. He studied Creative Writing, which means he learned how to write stories and poems. He also studied Africana Studies, which is about the history and culture of African people. While at Oberlin, he helped with a student group and did research on poetry by Black writers for two years.
Later, in 2016, he earned another advanced degree, a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry, from Virginia Tech.
His Writing
Xan Phillips' poems have been shared in many well-known magazines and online places. Some of these include BOMB, Poets.org, and Virginia Quarterly Review. His work has also appeared in The Offing, The Journal, Nashville Review, Ninth Letter, and a collection called Best Experimental Writing.
His Art
Besides writing, Phillips is also a painter. His paintings have been shown in magazines like The Kenyon Review, Poetry Project, and American Poets Magazine.
Awards and Special Honors
Phillips has received many special awards and opportunities, called fellowships, from different places. These include Oberlin College, Cave Canem, The Conversation Literary Festival, Callaloo, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, Brown University, and the University of Pittsburgh's Center for African American Poetry and Poetics. These fellowships help artists focus on their work.
