Xavier Gosé i Rovira (born in 1876 in Alcalá de Henares, died in 1915 in Lleida) was a talented Catalan artist. He was a painter and an illustrator, meaning he created pictures for books and magazines. His art style was known as Art Nouveau and Art Déco, which were popular in his time.

About Xavier Gosé

Xavier's father was an agronomist, someone who studies how to grow crops and manage land. Sadly, his father passed away when Xavier was only four years old. After this, his family moved back to Barcelona.

In 1894, Xavier started studying art at the Escola de la Llotja, a famous art school. There, he learned from a teacher named Josep Lluís Pellicer. From 1895 to 1898, he began drawing pictures for popular magazines like L'Esquella de la Torratxa. He also often visited a famous café called Els Quatre Gats, where he even showed his own drawings in an exhibition in 1899.

Working in Paris

In 1900, Xavier moved to Paris, France. Two years later, he started drawing funny pictures, called caricatures, for two satirical magazines. These magazines were called Le Rire (The Laugh) and L'Assiette au Beurre (The Plate of Butter). Even while in Paris, he kept sending his drawings to publications back in Barcelona.

Xavier also contributed his art to German Art Nouveau magazines, such as Jugend and Simplicissimus. During these years, his artwork was shown in many exhibitions across Spain. He even had his art displayed in Mexico during that country's 100-year celebration.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1912, Xavier took part in a big art show that featured artists from Lleida Province. The next year, his works were shown in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

When World War I started and began to affect life in Paris, Xavier decided to return to Catalonia. Sadly, he passed away shortly after from tuberculosis, a serious illness.

In the same year he died, a special exhibition of all his artworks was held at the "Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona." His paintings were also among the first major artworks bought by the Museu d'Art Jaume Morera. This museum has continued to show his work, with a recent exhibition in 2009.
