Xavier Rubert de Ventós (born September 1, 1939 – died January 28, 2023) was a smart Spanish person. He was a philosopher (someone who studies big ideas about life), a writer, and a politician. He spent his life thinking, writing, and working to make things better for people.

A Life of Learning and Teaching

Xavier Rubert de Ventós loved to learn. He first studied law and got his degree in 1961. Then, he went on to study philosophy at the University of Barcelona. In 1965, he earned a special degree called a doctorate. His main study was about aesthetics, which is the study of beauty and art.

He became a professor, teaching aesthetics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He also taught at famous universities in America, like Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley. He was a "visiting professor," which means he taught there for a short time.

Rubert de Ventós also helped create new programs. He started the Barcelona–New York Chair of Catalan Culture and Language. This program helped people learn about the culture and language of Catalonia, a region in Spain. He also helped start important groups like the New York Institute for Humanities.

Working for Change: His Political Journey

Xavier Rubert de Ventós was very active in politics, even when it was difficult. He was part of a group called the Workers' Front of Catalonia. Because of his work for change, he was arrested three times.

In 1975, he had to leave Spain and go to Paris because of threats from a group called the Falangists. While he was away, he was removed from his teaching job at the University of Barcelona.

Later, he joined the Socialist Party of Catalonia. He became a member of the Spanish parliament from 1982 to 1986. The parliament is where laws are made for the country. After that, he became a member of the European Parliament from 1986 to 1994. This parliament works on laws and issues for many countries in Europe.

He was also part of a group called the Commission for Dignity. This group worked to return important documents that were taken from people during the Spanish Civil War. They wanted to give these documents back to their rightful owners.

In 2012, he publicly supported a political party called Convergence and Union in an election in Catalonia.
