Xavier Trias i Vidal de Llobatera (born 5 August 1946) is a Spanish politician. He was the Mayor of Barcelona from July 2011 to June 2015. He has also held important roles in the Government of Catalonia, including being the Minister of Health. He is a member of the political party Together for Catalonia.

Meet Xavier Trias
Early Life and Education
Xavier Trias was born in Barcelona, Spain, on 5 August 1946. He is married and has four children and six grandchildren. He studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona, finishing his degree in 1970. He then became a specialist in pediatrics, which is the branch of medicine that deals with the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents.
After his studies in Barcelona, he continued his training in Genoa, Italy, and Bern, Switzerland, between 1971 and 1973. In Switzerland, he spent about a year and a half researching and treating metabolic diseases.
Working in Healthcare
From 1974 to 1981, Xavier Trias worked as a pediatrician at the Children's Hospital in Vall d'Hebron. He also served on important medical boards during this time.
In 1981, he started working for the Department of Health and Social Security of the Generalitat of Catalonia. This is the government of the Catalonia region in Spain. He became the Head of Hospital Care. In September 1983, he took on the role of Director General of Health Planning.
In July 1984, he was appointed Director General of the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS). He held this position until July 1988, when he became the Minister of Health. As Minister of Health, he helped improve the healthcare system in Catalonia, making it well-known and respected.
Other Important Roles
On 12 January 1996, Xavier Trias became the Minister of the Presidency. In this role, he worked closely with the President of Catalonia, Jordi Pujol. During this time, the government created the Catalonia Broadcasting Council (CAC), which helps manage broadcasting in the region. They also made improvements for government workers, like helping them balance their work and family life.
In March 2000, he was chosen to represent his political group, Convergence and Union (CiU), in the Spanish Parliament, called the Congress. He won the election and became the leader and spokesperson for the Catalan group in the Congress. He also chaired the Committee on Science and Technology.
Leading Barcelona
On 5 June 2010, Xavier Trias was announced as the candidate for Mayor of Barcelona. He had already been a member of the Barcelona City Council since 14 June 2003. In the elections on 22 May 2011, he won with 29% of the votes. He officially became the new Mayor of Barcelona on 2 July 2011. He served as Mayor until June 2015.
In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain, Xavier Trias was admitted to the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19. He was discharged from the hospital in April 2020. He continues to be involved in the Barcelona City Council, serving as a member from June 2023 to July 2024.
