History of Xert: A Journey Through Time
Xert has a very long history! On a hill called Mola Murada, you can find old remains from an ancient Iberian village. This village existed during the Bronze Age, which was thousands of years ago.
From Saracens to Knights
Later, during the time of the Umayyad conquest of Hispania, Xert was a Saracene town. This means it was part of the Muslim-ruled lands in Spain. It was connected to a bigger town called Cervera.
In 1233, Christian knights took control of Xert. First, it was ruled by the Knights Hospitaller. Then, in 1319, another group of knights, the Order of Montesa, took over. They ruled Xert for a very long time, until the 1800s. This was when the old system of "manorialism," where powerful lords owned the land, ended.
Battles and Changes
In 1836, there were important battles near Xert. These fights were between two groups: the Carlists and the Liberals. They were fighting over who should rule Spain.
In the past, Xert had a special system called a lligallo. This system helped organize how people herded their cattle in the area.
