Xu Jinglei (Chinese: 徐静蕾, born April 16, 1974) is a Chinese actress and film director. She is known as one of the Four Dan Actresses in China.

Early Life and Education
Xu Jinglei was born on April 16, 1974, in Chaoyang, Beijing, China. Her father, Xu Zijian, worked in a light bulb factory. He later started his own factory. Her mother, Yu Shurong, worked in a chemical factory. Xu also has a younger brother named Xu Xinyu.
When she was young, Xu studied calligraphy. This is a special way of writing beautifully. She learned many old Chinese poems by heart. Her father was very strict with her education. Because of her amazing calligraphy skills, she was able to get into Beijing No. 80 High School.
Xu first wanted to study make-up for theater. She applied to The Central Academy of Drama but was not accepted. Instead, she was accepted into the Performing Arts Department at the Beijing Film Academy. This is where she began her journey in acting.

Xu Jinglei started her acting career in 1994. Her first role was in a TV series called My Deskmate. She became very popular for her roles in TV shows like A Sentimental Story (1997). In this show, she played a policewoman. She also starred in Cherish Our Love Forever (1998). This was one of China's first popular teen dramas.
In 1999, she won an award for her role in the film Spicy Love Soup. She continued to gain success in movies. She won the Huabiao Award for Outstanding New Actress for I Love You (2002). She also won the Hundred Flowers Award for Best Actress for Spring Subway (2002). For her role in Far From Home (2002), she won the Golden Rooster Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Xu also starred in big movies like Confession of Pain (2006) and The Warlords (2007). She later took a break from acting. During this time, she focused on directing and managing new talent. She returned to acting in 2017 with the science fiction thriller Battle of Memories.
Directing Films
Xu Jinglei started directing movies in 2003. Her first film was My Father and I. She also starred in this movie. It was China's first independent film production. The movie was about the relationship between a Chinese father and his daughter. For this film, Xu won the Golden Rooster Award for Best New Director.
Her second movie as a director was Letter from an Unknown Woman (2004). This film was based on a famous novel. It won her the Silver Shell for Best Director at a film festival in Spain.
In 2010, Xu directed and starred in Go Lala Go!. This movie was based on a popular book about a young woman's journey in her workplace. In 2014, Xu was recognized as a top female director in China. She was the first woman director to have six films that earned a lot of money at the box office and won international awards.
She continued to direct romantic movies like Dear Enemy (2011) and Somewhere Only We Know (2015). These films did well. In 2017, she directed an action thriller called The Missing. She also produced a web-series about aliens called My 200-Million-Year-Old Classmate (2018).
Other Activities and Contributions
Since 2003, Xu Jinglei has also taught acting at the Beijing Film Academy.
In 2005, Xu started a blog. It became very popular. By 2006, her blog was the most popular in the world. It had the most links pointing to it from other blogs.
She also started her own company, Kaila Pictures Corporation, in 2006. This company produced films and managed talent. She also launched a website and digital magazines.
In 2007, Xu worked with a company to create her own calligraphy computer font. It was called "Founder Jinglei Simplified." This font was even used by Starbucks in China.
In 2008, Xu was named "China Environmental Ambassador." This was an important title given by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the United Nations.
Xu has also been a judge on TV shows like China's Got Talent in 2012. In 2018, she participated in a singing competition show called Crossover Singer.
She also started a fund to help others. She donated money to support books for the blind and education for children of migrant workers. She also supported filmmaking projects.
Personal Life
Xu Jinglei has been in a relationship with Taiwanese-American singer and actor Stanley Huang since 2010. They met while working together on the film Go Lala Go!. Since 2017, they have been living in the United States.
