Xu Ling (Chinese: 徐陵; pinyin: Xú Líng) was an important writer and editor in ancient China. He lived from 507 to 583 AD. He is best known for putting together a famous collection of poems called New Songs from the Jade Terrace. This was during a time when many great poems were written, known as the Southern Dynasties era (420–589 AD). His special adult name, called a courtesy name (zi), was Xiao Mu (Chinese: 孝穆; pinyin: Xiào Mù).

Who Was Xu Ling?

Xu Ling was born in a place that is now called Tancheng County in Shandong Province, China. From a young age, he became well-known for his amazing poetry and writing skills.

Xu Ling's Famous Poetry Collection

Xu Ling gained lasting fame for his poetry book, New Songs from the Jade Terrace. He created this collection with the support of a powerful person named Xiao Gang. Xiao Gang was first a prince. Later, he became an emperor of the Liang Dynasty (549-551 AD) and was known as Liang Jianwendi.
