The Yagalingu were a group of Aboriginal people who lived in the state of Queensland, Australia. They were part of the rich and diverse cultures of Australia's First Peoples. Their language might have been a type of the Bidjara language.

Yagalingu Traditional Lands

The Yagalingu people lived on a large area of land. This area was about 20,700 square kilometers (8,000 square miles). A researcher named Norman Tindale mapped their traditional country.

Their land stretched from the top of the Belyando River in the north. It went south all the way to a place called Avoca. The northern part of their land was near Laglan. To the west, their country reached the Great Dividing Range. The eastern and southern edges of their land were along the Drummond Range.

Yagalingu Family Groups

The Yagalingu people were made up of different family groups, often called clans. These clans shared connections to specific parts of the land. They also had their own traditions and stories.

Some of the known Yagalingu clan groups include:

  • Wakelbara: This clan was known as the 'eel clan'. The word wakel means 'eel'. They lived near Laglan.
  • Kokleburra
  • Owanburra, Kowanburra, or Auanbura: These names refer to a clan group that lived along the upper parts of the Belyando River.
