Where is Yakobi Island?
Yakobi Island is found south of a place called Cross Sound. It sits right next to the western side of Chichagof Island. Two waterways, Lisianski Inlet and Lisianski Strait, separate Yakobi Island from Chichagof Island.
What's in a Name?
The island got its name from a person named Ivan Iakobi. He was a governor-general, which is like a very important leader, in a part of Russia long ago. A Russian explorer named Alexander Andreyevich Baranov gave the island this name. But the native Tlingit people, who have lived in this area for a very long time, have their own name for the island. They call it Takhanes.
How Big is Yakobi Island?
Yakobi Island covers an area of about 82.37 square miles (213.3 square kilometers). To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of a small city. Even though it's quite large, no one lives on Yakobi Island all year round. It remains a wild and natural place.
