Yanamarey is a tall mountain located in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range in Peru. It stands about 5,237 meters (17,182 feet) high. The name Yanamarey might come from the Quechua language. It could mean "black batan" or "black grindstone." A batan or grindstone is a special stone used for grinding things. Sometimes, the mountain is also called Yanaraju.

This mountain is found in the Ancash area of Peru, between the Recuay and Huari provinces. Yanamarey is east of another mountain called Pucaraju. It is also northeast of Lake Querococha, with Matashcu to its north and Cahuish to its south.

The Yanamarey River

A river called the Yanamaray River starts on the western side of the mountain. This river is very important because it carries meltwater from the Yanamarey glacier. This water flows into Lake Querococha, which is a beautiful lake nearby. From there, the water eventually reaches the Santa River, one of Peru's major rivers.

Yanamarey Glacier: A Changing Landscape

The Yanamarey mountain has a glacier, which is a large body of ice that moves slowly. Scientists have been watching the Yanamarey glacier closely for many years. Their observations show that the glacier has been getting smaller very quickly. This is known as "retreating." The rapid melting of glaciers like Yanamarey is a sign of climate change.
