Yanco is a small village in New South Wales, Australia. About 432 people live there. Its name, Yanco, comes from the Wiradjuri language. It means the sound of running water.
Yanco is only 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) from a town called Leeton. You can find it along the Irrigation Way. In Yanco, you can visit the Powerhouse Museum and McCaughey Park. It's also home to the Murrumbidgee Rural Studies Centre and Yanco Agricultural High School.
A company called Murrumbidgee Irrigation built the Roach’s Surge Reservoir near Yanco. This huge reservoir can hold up to 5 million tonnes of water!
The Yanco North Post Office first opened on March 1, 1888. It changed its name to Yanko in 1892. Then, in 1928, it became Yanco, which is what it's called today.
Sports in Yanco
Rugby League
Yanco has a rugby league team called the Yanco-Wamoon Hawks. They play in the Group 20 Rugby League competition. This team is famous for winning five championships in a row! They won every year from 1992 to 1996. That's a record for the competition.
The Hawks play their games at the Yanco Sports Ground. It's a very nice oval located across the railway and an irrigation channel from the town. For a few years, from 2012 to 2014, the team joined with a rival team from Narrandera. They played as the Bidgee Hurricanes. But they split up again before the 2015 season.
Australian Rules Football
Yanco also used to have an Australian Rules Football team. They played in the Farrer Football League with a nearby village called Whitton. Their team was known as the Whitton-Yanco Tigers.
