What's the Story of Yancy Mills?

The area we now call Yancy Mills has an interesting past. For a while, it was simply known as "Yancy."

A post office was first opened here in 1861. It was called "Yancey." Later, in 1870, the name of the post office was changed to "Yancey Mills." This name stuck for the community too. The post office served the local people for many years before it finally closed in 1954.

The community got its name from a place far away: Yancey Mills, Virginia. A person who lived in Yancy Mills, Missouri, was a "millner." A millner is someone who owns or works at a mill, which is a building where grain is ground into flour. This millner was originally from Yancey Mills, Virginia, and decided to name the new community after their old home.
