Yang Huiyan (simplified Chinese: 杨惠妍; traditional Chinese: 楊惠妍; pinyin: Yáng Huìyán) was born in 1981. She is a very successful businesswoman from China. She works in property development, which means building and selling homes and other buildings.
Yang Huiyan is the chairwoman of Country Garden Holdings. This is a big company that builds many properties. Her father, Yang Guoqiang, gave her a large part of the company in 2007. For many years, she was known as the richest woman in Asia. In August 2023, her wealth was about $5.5 billion. However, by August 2024, she was no longer on the list of the world's richest people.
About Yang Huiyan
Yang Huiyan studied at Ohio State University in the United States. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in arts and science. She was also part of a special group called The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
In 2018, Yang Huiyan became a citizen of Cyprus. This is an island country in Europe. In June 2022, she was named one of the "100 Most Powerful People in Global Hospitality." This list recognizes important leaders in the hotel and tourism industry.
Her Business Journey
Yang Huiyan's father, Yang Guoqiang, started the real estate company Country Garden in 1997. This company builds houses and apartments. In 2007, her father gave her 70% of the company's shares. Shares are like small pieces of ownership in a company.
Later that year, Country Garden offered its shares to the public for the first time. This is called an Initial Public Offering (IPO). The company raised about $1.6 billion from this offering. By August 2021, Yang Huiyan's wealth was around $27.3 billion. She also helped the company raise more money in 2014 by selling new shares.
In February 2023, her father, Yang Guoqiang, stepped down as the chairman of Country Garden. Yang Huiyan then took over his role as chairman.
Yang Huiyan was once the richest woman in Asia. But because of some problems in China's property market, her wealth decreased. She lost a lot of money between 2021 and 2023. By August 2023, her wealth was about $5.5 billion.
Helping Others
In 2023, Yang Huiyan made a big donation to charity. She gave about 55% of her shares in a property management company to a charity. This charity was started by her younger sister. The donation was worth about $826 million.
This happened while China's real estate market was facing challenges. Even with this large donation, Yang Huiyan still controls more than 36% of the company's shares. The charity that received the donation has promised not to sell these shares for ten years. The money from these shares will be used to help many good causes. These causes are in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and mainland China.
