The Yangga people, sometimes called Jangga, are an Aboriginal Australian group from the state of Queensland. They are one of the many Indigenous peoples who have lived in Australia for thousands of years. It's important not to confuse them with the Yanga people, who are a different group.

The Yangga are an Aboriginal Australian group. They have a rich history and culture that is connected to their traditional lands in Queensland.

Where Did the Yangga Live?

The traditional lands of the Yangga people covered a large area, about 10,880 square kilometers (4,200 square miles). This area was mainly around the eastern parts of the Suttor River.

Their lands stretched north to the Burdekin River and south towards a place called Glenavon. Today, areas like Mount Coolon, Yacamunda, Mount Tindale, and Hidden Valley are all part of what was once Yangga country.

What Language Did They Speak?

The language spoken by the Yangga people was also known as Jangga. A famous researcher named Norman Tindale recorded this name for their language.

How Were the Yangga Organized?

The Yangga people were organized into different family groups, often called kin groups or clans. These groups helped manage their society and traditions. We know the name of at least one of these groups:

  • The Durroburra were a clan that lived in the northern part of Yangga lands.
