Yara Yavelberg

Yara Yavelberg (born May 7, 1943 – died August 20, 1971) was a Brazilian psychologist and university teacher. She was part of a group that resisted the Brazilian military government (a time when the military ruled the country). Recent tests have shown she was killed by government agents in Salvador, Bahia in 1971.

Her Life Story

Yara Yavelberg was born in São Paulo, a big city in Brazil. At first, she quietly supported the groups that were against the military government. Later, she joined one of these groups called MR-8.

She had a relationship with Carlos Lamarca. He was an officer in the Brazilian Army who left his job to become a leader in the guerrilla movement. This movement fought against the military government. When the movement started to fail, Yara and Carlos went to Bahia to hide.

Honoring Her Memory

The Psychology Institute at the University of São Paulo honored Yara Yavelberg. She had studied psychology there. They named their student center the Yara Yavelberg Academic Center.

Yara was also a friend of Dilma Rousseff, who later became the president of Brazil. Dilma Rousseff spoke about Yara when she announced she was running for president.
