Where the Yarluyandi Lived
The Yarluyandi people traditionally lived on a large area of land. This land covered about 17,870 square kilometers (6,900 square miles). It stretched from the Mulligan River south of Annandale to Alton Downs. Their land reached Atna Hill in the west and went as far as Birdsville and the Diamantina River in the east.
Native Title Rights
Today, the Yarluyandi people work together with the Wangkangurru people. They are represented by a group called the Wangkangurru Yarluyandi Aboriginal Corporation. In 2014, their native title was officially recognized. This means their traditional rights to a large area of land in the Simpson Desert were confirmed by law.
Yarluyandi Language
The Yarluyandi language is very similar to the Ngamini language. Both languages are important parts of the culture and history of these Aboriginal groups.
