Early Life and School
Ycee was born in Festac Town, a neighborhood in Lagos State, Nigeria. He went to Dr. Soyemi Memorial Nursery and Primary School for his early education. For high school, he attended the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Ojo. Later, Ycee studied marine biology at the University of Lagos.
Ycee's Music Career
Ycee began his music journey in 2012 as an underground rapper. This means he was making music without a major record label. He then signed a deal with Tinny Entertainment. He took a short break from music to focus on his studies at the University of Lagos.
In May 2015, Ycee released the popular song "Condo." This song was nominated for Best Collaboration and Best Music Video of the Year. On July 20, 2015, he released another hit song called "Jagaban." The famous Nigerian rapper Olamide asked to be on the remix of "Jagaban."
Ycee gained more attention when he was nominated for Revelation of the Year at the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards. He was also nominated for Best Artist in African Pop at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards.
On June 25, 2017, his song "Juice" with Maleek Berry became very popular. It was ranked number one on Nigeria radio charts. Ycee had a sold-out concert at the O2 Academy Islington in London on January 12, 2018. Other artists from his label, like Bella Alubo and Eugy, also performed.
On January 15, 2019, Ycee announced that he had left Tinny Entertainment. He also shared that he started his own record label called ANBT. ANBT stands for "Ain't Nobody Badder Than."
Ycee released his first full album, Ycee vs Zaheer, on November 8, 2019. The album mixes different music styles like hip-hop, trap, and Afrobeats. This album followed his earlier music, including his first EP First Wave (2017). It also followed his EP with Bella Alubo, called Late Night Vibrations (2018). Many producers worked on the album, and it featured artists like Davido, Niniola, and Phyno.
Throughout his career, Ycee has helped new artists become known. For example, he was featured on the "Nothing" Remix by Dapo Turburna in 2016. He also worked with Bella Alubo on her song "Radio" in 2017. They even made a joint EP together. Some people believe this is Ycee's way of giving back, just as Olamide helped him with the "Jagaban" remix.
