Geography of Ycoden-Daute-Isora
This special wine area covers nine towns. These include Icod de los Vinos in the north and Guía de Isora in the south. The vineyards, where grapes grow, are found on the sides of Teide. Teide is a very large volcano! These vineyards are at different heights. They range from just 50 meters above the sea to as high as 1,500 meters.
Soils for Grape Growing
The grapevines in Ycoden-Daute-Isora grow in many kinds of soil. Most of the soil has a lot of volcanic ash and rocks. This is because of the nearby volcano. Near the coast, the soil is mostly sandy and volcanic. Further inland, it has more volcanic material mixed with sandy clay. These different soils help give the wines their unique taste.
Climate in the Wine Region
The Ycoden-Daute-Isora area is one of the warmest places in Tenerife. But in winter, it can get cold enough for frost to form. It rains quite a bit on the western slopes of Teide. Between May and August, the trade winds bring humidity. These winds help keep the plants from getting too dry. Strong storms are not common. However, they can sometimes cause damage to the vineyards.
