Ye Jiangchuan (born November 20, 1960) is a famous Chinese chess player. He holds the highest title in chess, called Grandmaster. He was the second player from China to earn this special title, which he received in 1993. On January 1, 2000, he became the first Chinese player to reach a chess rating of over 2600. This was a big achievement in the chess world!

Ye Jiangchuan's Chess Journey

Starting Young and Winning Big

Ye Jiangchuan was born in Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu, China. He started learning chess when he was 17 years old. Just three years later, at age 20, he became the national champion of China! He won the Chinese Chess Championship seven times in total. These wins happened in 1981, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1994, and 1996.

Playing for His Country

Ye Jiangchuan has played for China in many important team competitions. He participated in the Chess Olympiad 12 times. The Chess Olympiad is like the Olympic Games for chess players. In his very first Olympiad in 1982, he won a silver medal for his individual performance.

He was also part of the team that won the Asian Team Chess Championship four times. His best team result at an Olympiad was in 1998. In that year, he played on the top board for China, and the team finished in fifth place.

Top Tournaments and Rankings

Ye Jiangchuan also won the Dato' Tan Chin Nam Cup in 1995 and 1999. He was also a co-champion in 2001. He competed in the 2001 FIDE World Championship. He made it to the fourth round, which meant he was among the top 9-16 players. He also reached the quarter-finals in the FIDE World Cup in both 2000 and 2002.

From 2000 to 2004, Ye Jiangchuan was consistently ranked among the top 25 chess players in the world. His highest world ranking was 17th in October 2000.

Becoming a Coach

After 2000, Ye Jiangchuan started playing less often. This is because he became the main coach for the Chinese national chess teams. He coached both the men's and women's teams. In 2005, he was given the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. This title recognizes his skill and experience in teaching chess.

Playing for Beijing Chess Club

Ye Jiangchuan also plays for the Beijing chess club. This club is part of the China Chess League (CCL).
