Yellagonga facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Yellagonga was an important leader of the Whadjuk Noongar people. He lived on the northern side of the Swan River in what is now Perth, Western Australia. He passed away in 1843.

The early European settlers believed Yellagonga was the owner of a large area of land. However, among the Noongar people, rights to land were also passed down through women. Yellagonga was able to hunt in the wetlands north of Perth because his wife, Yingani, had strong family connections to that land.

In 1843, newspapers reported that Yellagonga had died. They said he was a "mild, amiable" leader. He fell from a rock near the river and drowned.

His Legacy Today

Yellagonga's name lives on in Western Australia.

Yellagonga Regional Park
