A yellow-throated leaflove bird

The yellow-throated leaflove (Atimastillas flavicollis) is a cool bird that belongs to the bulbul family. It's the only species in its group, called Atimastillas. You can find this bird living in western and central Africa. It likes to live in dry forests, moist grasslands (savannas), and areas with lots of bushes.

About the Yellow-throated Leaflove

This bird gets its name from its bright yellow throat! It's a type of passerine bird, which means it's a "perching bird." These birds have special feet that help them grip onto branches.

How Scientists Name This Bird

Scientists have changed the name of the yellow-throated leaflove a few times! It was first described by a scientist named William Swainson in 1837. Over the years, it was placed in different bird groups, like Haematornis and Chlorocichla. In 2010, it was finally moved to its own special group, Atimastillas.

Sometimes, scientists call this bird by other names, like the mango bulbul or yellow-throated greenbul. Just be careful, because the name 'yellowthroat' can also mean a different type of bird from the Geothlypis group!

Different Kinds of Yellow-throated Leafloves

Even though it's one species, there are three slightly different types, called subspecies, of the yellow-throated leaflove:

  • A. f. flavicollis: This type lives from Senegal and Gambia all the way to northern Cameroon and the north-western Central African Republic.
  • Bosum yellow-throated greenbul (A. f. soror): This one is also known as the Congo white-throated leaflove. You can find it from central Cameroon to west-central Ethiopia and the central Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Uganda yellow-throated greenbul (A. f. flavigula): This subspecies lives in Angola, the south-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, western Kenya, and western Tanzania.
