About the Yellow-Whiskered Greenbul
This bird gets its name from the yellow feathers that look a bit like whiskers near its beak. Greenbuls are known for their mostly green or dull-colored feathers, which help them blend in with the leaves in their forest homes. They are usually quite active and can be heard making different calls.
Where They Live: Habitats
The yellow-whiskered greenbul lives in several types of warm, wet places. These include:
- Dry forests in tropical or subtropical areas.
- Moist lowland forests, which are forests found in lower, flatter areas.
- Moist montane forests, which are forests found on mountains.
- Moist shrublands, which are areas with lots of bushes and shrubs.
These different habitats provide the birds with food, shelter, and places to build their nests. They are well-suited to living among the trees and plants.
How Scientists Classify Them
Scientists group living things into categories to understand how they are related. This is called taxonomy. The yellow-whiskered greenbul belongs to the bulbul family.
Different Types of Yellow-Whiskered Greenbuls
There are three main types, or subspecies, of the yellow-whiskered greenbul. These subspecies are slightly different from each other and live in different areas:
- E. l. australis: This type is found on the Ufipa Plateau in Tanzania.
- Upper Guinea yellow-whiskered greenbul (E. l. congener): You can find this one from Senegal all the way to southwestern Nigeria.
- Uganda yellow-whiskered greenbul (E. l. latirostris): This is the most common type. It lives in a wide area, from southeastern Nigeria to southern Sudan, western Kenya, western Tanzania, parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and northern Angola. This type is also sometimes called the Kilimanjaro sombre greenbul.
