The Yellow Penduline Tit (Anthoscopus parvulus) is a tiny yellow bird. It belongs to the Remizidae family. You can find this small passerine bird in the dry, grassy areas called savannas. It lives in West Africa.
What's in a Name?
Scientists give every animal a special two-part name. This helps everyone know exactly which animal they are talking about. The Yellow Penduline Tit's scientific name is Anthoscopus parvulus.
A German explorer and bird expert named Theodor von Heuglin first described this bird in 1864. He gave it the name Aegithalus parvulus. Later, it was moved to the group (or genus) called Anthoscopus. Another German bird expert, Jean Cabanis, created this group in 1851.
The name Anthoscopus comes from ancient Greek words. Anthos means "blossom" or "flower." Skopos means "searcher." So, it's like a "flower searcher." The second part of the name, parvulus, is Latin. It means "very small." This name fits the bird perfectly!
Some scientists think all Yellow Penduline Tits are the same. Others believe there might be slightly different types, even if they look very similar. These different types might live in different places, like Senegal, Ghana, or Uganda.
What Does It Look Like?
The Yellow Penduline Tit is a really small bird. It is about 8 cm (3.1 in) (about 3 inches) long. It weighs only 6–8 g (0.21–0.28 oz) (less than an ounce). That's about the same as two pennies!
This bird has an olive-yellow color on its back. Its belly and chest are bright yellow. It also has a dull grey stripe that goes through its eye.
Its wings are brown, but the edges of the feathers are yellow. The main flight feathers have whitish edges. This creates a thin, light stripe on its wing. The tail is brown. The bird has a cone-shaped, pointed beak. It also has strong legs, which help it move around. Male and female Yellow Penduline Tits look very much alike.
