How Yellowquill College Is Run
Yellowquill University College is guided by the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council. The eight leaders, or chiefs, from the different First Nation communities are on its board. This means they help make important decisions for the college.
The college is set up as a non-profit group. This means it uses all its money to help students and improve the school. It gets money from the governments of Manitoba and Canada. It also gets support from First Nation communities across Canada.
A Look at Yellowquill's History
Yellowquill College first opened its doors in 1984. It was located in a building in Portage la Prairie. The college was created because of an important idea from 1972. This idea was called "Indian Control of Indian Education." It meant that First Nations people should control their own schools.
When it first started, Yellowquill College had sixteen students. Since then, over a thousand students have graduated! In 2012, about 200 students were attending the college.
The college has moved a few times to bigger and better places. In 2000, it moved to Winnipeg. Then, in 2003, it moved to a new spot on Assiniboine Avenue. In 2012, it moved again into a larger building. Yellowquill also works with communities like Bloodvein First Nation and Long Plain First Nation. They offer programs there, like the Mature Student High School Diploma.
