How Yellowquill University College is Run
Yellowquill University College is guided by the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council. The leaders, called chiefs, from eight different First Nation communities make up the college's board of directors. This board helps make important decisions for the college.
The college is set up as a non-profit organization. This means it uses any money it earns to help the college grow and support its students. Yellowquill University College gets funding from the governments of Manitoba and Canada. It also receives support from First Nation communities across Canada.
History of Yellowquill University College
Yellowquill College first opened its doors in Portage la Prairie. It was located in an old school building. The college was created because of an important idea from 1972. This idea was called "Indian Control of Indian Education." It meant that First Nations people should be in charge of their own education.
When it first started, the college had sixteen students. Since then, over a thousand students have graduated from Yellowquill. In 2012, about 200 students were attending the college.
Moving to New Locations
Yellowquill College moved to Winnipeg in 2000. It moved again in 2003 to 340 Assiniboine Avenue. In 2012, the college moved into the building that used to belong to Manitoba Hydro.
Yellowquill also works with communities outside of Winnipeg. They offer a high school diploma program for older students in places like Bloodvein First Nation, Long Plain First Nation, and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. This helps more people get their high school education.
