The Long Plain First Nation (Ojibwe: Gaa-ginooshkodeyaag) is a community of Ojibway and Dakota people. They are a First Nation in Manitoba, Canada. A First Nation is a self-governing group, much like a small town council.

Their main lands are called reserves. These include the Long Plain Reserve #6, the Keeshkeemaquah Reserve near Portage La Prairie, and the Madison Indian Reserve #1. The Madison Indian Reserve #1 was the first urban reserve in Winnipeg.

The main reserve is located southwest of Portage la Prairie along the Assiniboine River. It is near other communities and borders the lands of the Dakota Plains First Nation. The leader of the Long Plain First Nation is called a Chief. The current Chief is Kyra Wilson. She is the second woman to hold this important role in their history.

  • Long Plain Reserve No. 6 is in the Central Plains Region of Manitoba. It is about 14 km (8.7 mi) southwest of Portage la Prairie. It is also about 98 km (61 mi) west of Winnipeg.
  • Keeshkeemaquah Reserve is located near Portage La Prairie. This land was once the site of a residential school. In 1984, the school building was updated. It became home to the Yellowquill College. The college later moved to Winnipeg in 2000. Today, this land is used for many things. It includes the Keeshkeemaquah Conference and Gaming Centre. There is also a gas station, a medical clinic, and housing offices.
  • Madison Indian Reserve #1 is an urban reserve in Winnipeg. It is west of the Polo Park Shopping Centre. The First Nation bought this land in 2006. In 2011, a large part of the building was updated. It was then leased to the Yellowquill College Inc. Other parts were updated in 2012 for offices. These offices are used by groups like Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and Manitoba Treaty Commission Office. In 2013, this site officially became a reserve. It was the first urban reserve in Winnipeg.

Community Life

The Long Plain First Nation has its own radio station. It is called Rez Radio 101.7 FM. This station serves the Long Plain community.

The Long Plain First Nation Annual Pow-wow started in 1876. It is one of Manitoba's oldest pow-wow celebrations. A pow-wow is a special gathering. It includes dancing, singing, and celebrating Indigenous culture. This event usually happens during the August long weekend. It runs from Friday evening to Sunday night.

The Long Plain First Nation also runs the Long Plain School. This school teaches students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Yellowquill College also has a program on the Long Plain Reserve #6. This program helps older students earn their High School Diploma.
