A Look Back at Yeomanry House
The building we now call Yeomanry House was first built in 1725. Back then, it was known as Wisteria House. For many years, it was a regular house.
Becoming a Military Hub
A big change happened in 1910. Wisteria House was turned into a military base! It became the new home for the Hertfordshire Yeomanry. This was a group of local soldiers who trained to be ready for action. They moved their main office from St Albans to Hertford.
Yeomanry House During Wartime
Just a few years later, in August 1914, World War I began. The soldiers of the Hertfordshire Yeomanry were called to duty right from Yeomanry House. They were sent to fight in faraway places like Gallipoli. Later, they moved to the Western Front, which was a major battle area in Europe.
A New Role for the Building
After the war, the Hertfordshire Yeomanry changed. They became an artillery unit, which means they used large guns. Another military training hall in Hertford, at Port Hill, was no longer used. So, Yeomanry House became the main place for military training in the town. This kind of training hall is often called a "drill hall."
Modern Day Army Reserve Centre
In 1967, the Territorial Army (which is like a part-time army for volunteers) was reorganized. Because of this, new military units were formed at Yeomanry House.
- In 1969, the 5th (Hertfordshire) Company was created.
- Over the years, this unit changed names and groups several times.
- It became part of the Royal Anglian Regiment in different forms.
- In 1999, it was known as E (Essex and Hertfordshire) Company of the East of England Regiment.
- By 2006, it was called 3 (Essex and Hertfordshire) Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment.
Today, Yeomanry House is still an active Army Reserve Centre. This means it's still used by volunteer soldiers for training and other military activities.
