Yevgeny Gavrilovich Minayev (Russian: Евгений Гаврилович Минаев; 1933–1993) was an amazing Russian weightlifter. He competed for the Soviet Union during his career. Yevgeny won a silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Four years later, he earned a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Yevgeny Minayev's Weightlifting Journey

Yevgeny Minayev began his weightlifting training while serving in the Soviet Army. His first big competition was the 1956 Soviet Championships. There, he set a new world record in the "press" lift. Even with this record, he finished fourth overall in that event.

Olympic and World Success

Despite his fourth-place finish, Yevgeny was chosen for the 1956 Olympics. He won a silver medal, coming in second to Isaac Berger. Yevgeny and Isaac had a strong rivalry in weightlifting. Isaac beat Yevgeny at the 1958 and 1961 World Championships.

However, Yevgeny defeated Isaac at the 1957 and 1962 World Championships. Their most famous match was at the 1960 Olympics. Yevgeny won the gold medal after a long, tough competition.

National and European Titles

Yevgeny Minayev was also very successful in his home country. He won seven national titles in the Soviet Union. These wins happened in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, and 1966.

He also became a European champion three times. He won European gold medals in 1958, 1960, and 1962. In 1961, he earned a European silver medal.

Setting World Records

Throughout his career, Yevgeny Minayev set many world records. He achieved a total of 13 world records. Nine of these were in the "press" lift. He also set one record in the "snatch" lift. The remaining three records were for his total combined score.

Life After Sports

Yevgeny Minayev was known for his unique training style. He preferred to train on his own and sometimes missed team practices. Because of this, he eventually left the national team in the mid-1960s. This happened even though he was still a national champion.

He stopped competing in 1966. For a short time, he worked as a weightlifting coach. Later, he moved back to his hometown of Klin. There, he took on various temporary jobs, including working on farms and in workshops. Yevgeny passed away in December 1993.
