Ynys Moelfre, a small island near Anglesey.

Ynys Moelfre (also known as Moelfre Island) is a small island located off the coast of Anglesey, a county in Wales. This island is quite close to the mainland. At low tide, it measures about 261 meters long and 121 meters wide. Its total area is around 6.6 acres.

The closest village to the island is Moelfre. A narrow, shallow channel called Y Swnt (which means The Strait or The Sound) separates the island from the village. This channel is never wider than 194 meters. When the tide is very low, especially during extreme Spring tides, the water in Y Swnt can be shallow enough to walk across. Sometimes, the ground is even dry all the way to the island.

Exploring Ynys Moelfre Island

Ynys Moelfre is a natural island with no buildings or structures made by people. Because it's so close to the mainland, you can find different types of plants growing there. These include various grasses and a few kinds of wild flowers.

Amazing Animals of Ynys Moelfre

The island is home to many interesting animals, especially birds. You might spot different types of gulls and terns flying overhead. Other birds that live or visit the island include gannets, fulmars, and large skuas (like the Great Skua or Arctic Skua).

A group of seals also lives on Ynys Moelfre. These marine mammals can often be seen resting on the rocks or swimming nearby. Sometimes, you might even see porpoises in the waters around the island. Interestingly, some local people call it Rat Island.
