Early Life and Marriage
As a young girl, Yolanda was sent to Poland. There, she lived with her sister, Kinga, who was married to the Duke of Poland. Kinga helped teach Yolanda many things. In 1257, Yolanda married Bolesław the Pious, who was a duke.
Yolanda and Bolesław had three daughters:
- Elisabeth of Kalisz (born 1263)
- Jadwiga of Kalisz (born 1266)
- Anna of Kalisz (born 1278)
Helping Others
During her marriage, Yolanda was well-known for her great kindness. She spent a lot of time helping the poor and those in need across the country. She also gave money and support to monasteries, friaries, and hospitals. These places often cared for sick or poor people. Her husband, Bolesław, supported her so much in her charity work that people called him "the Pious." This nickname means he was very religious and good. Yolanda became a widow in 1279 when Bolesław passed away.
Life as a Nun
After her husband's death, Yolanda decided to dedicate her life to God. She joined a group of nuns called the Poor Clares. Her sister Kinga had started this monastery in a place called Sandez. Yolanda went there with Kinga and one of her own daughters, Anna.
Founding a New Monastery
Later, the nuns had to move because of fighting in their area. Yolanda then started a brand new monastery in Gniezno. She worked hard to build this new home for the nuns. Not long before she passed away, she was asked to become the leader, or abbess, of the community of nuns.
Becoming a Saint
Yolanda has been recognized for her holy life. She is considered a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic Church. Her two sisters, Kinga and Margaret, have already been officially declared saints. Yolanda is remembered for her compassion and her dedication to helping others throughout her life.
