Yolande II or Yolande of Nevers (French: Yolande de Bourgogne) was an important noblewoman who lived from December 1247 to June 2, 1280. She was the daughter of Odo of Burgundy and Matilda II, Countess of Nevers. Yolande became a countess in her own right, meaning she inherited the title directly.

Becoming Countess of Nevers
When Yolande's mother, Matilda II, passed away in 1262, Yolande became the Countess of Nevers. She also held claims to the regions of Tonnerre and Auxerre. These were large and important areas in France.
In 1273, a special court called the Parlement de Paris helped decide how the family's lands would be divided. It was decided that Yolande would receive Nevers and the Château de Druyes. Her sisters, Margaret and Adelaide, inherited Tonnerre and Auxerre. Their aunt, Agnes, received the Bourbon lands.
Claiming the Duchy of Burgundy
Yolande's grandfather, Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy, died in 1272. After her second marriage, Yolande and her husband, Robert III, Count of Flanders, claimed the Duchy of Burgundy. They believed they should inherit it because Yolande was the child of Hugh's oldest son.
However, Hugh IV had named his third son, Robert, as the heir to the Duchy in his will. He gave other lands to his granddaughters. King Philip III of France helped decide this family dispute. He ruled in favor of Yolande's uncle, who became Duke Robert II. This decision was based on who was most closely related to the previous duke.
Yolande's Marriages and Family
Yolande was married twice during her lifetime. Both marriages were important for her family and the lands she ruled.
First Marriage: John Tristan
Yolande's first husband was John Tristan, Count of Valois. He was the son of the French King Louis IX of France and Queen Margaret of Provence. They were married in June 1265. Sadly, they did not have any children together. John Tristan died in 1270 during the Eighth Crusade in Tunis. He passed away from a serious illness called dysentery.
Second Marriage: Robert III of Flanders
Yolande later married Robert III, Count of Flanders. They had several children who continued their noble lines.
