Odo of Burgundy (born in 1230, died August 4, 1266) was an important nobleman in medieval France. He was known as the Count of Nevers, Auxerre, and Tonnerre. Odo was the son of Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy and Yolande of Dreux.
Odo was a brave knight who took part in the Crusades, which were religious wars during the Middle Ages. He traveled to the Holy Land (a region in the Middle East important to many religions) to help protect Christian lands.
A Crusader's Journey
In 1265, Odo became one of the last European leaders to go on a Crusade to the Holy Land. He led a group of about fifty knights. One of his well-known knights was Erard of Valery.
Odo played a key role in defending the city of Acre. This city was very important to the Crusaders. In June 1266, Sultan Baybars I attacked Acre. Odo and his knights helped protect the city from the Sultan's forces.
A Noble's Legacy
Odo died in Acre on August 7, 1266. He was buried in the church of Saint Nicholas there. Before he died, Odo made sure his wealth was used wisely. He left money to pay his followers and to support hospitals and religious places.
A writer from that time, known as the Templar of Tyre, described Odo as a "holy man." People respected his burial place. Not long after his death, a poet named Rutebeuf wrote a sad poem about Odo. The poem was called Complainte du comte Eudes de Nevers. It honored Odo as a brave knight and mourned the city that had lost its protector.
After Odo's death, his lands in Burgundy went to his brother, Robert.
Family Life
Odo married a noblewoman named Maud of Dampierre. Together, they had four children:
