Nevers is a city in central France. It is located in the Nièvre department, which is part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Nevers is the capital city, also called the préfecture, of the Nièvre department.
It is the biggest city in the Nièvre department. It is also one of the largest cities in its region, after Dijon and Chalon-sur-Saône.

History of Nevers
The name of the city, Nevers, comes from the Nièvre river. Long ago, Julius Caesar called the town Noviodunum. Later, it was known as Nebirnum, named after the river.
Nevers used to be the capital of an old area called Nivernais. On March 4, 1790, when departments were created in France, Nevers became the capital of the Nièvre department.
Geography of Nevers
Nevers is about 260 kilometers (160 miles) southeast of Paris. It sits where the Loire and Nièvre rivers meet.
The city covers an area of 17.33 square kilometers (6.69 square miles). Its average height above sea level is 203 meters (666 feet). At the city hall, the height is 201 meters (659 feet).
Nevers is surrounded by several other towns. These include Varennes-Vauzelles, Coulanges-lès-Nevers, Saint-Éloi, Sermoise-sur-Loire, Challuy, and Marzy.

Population of Nevers
Nevers has a population of 36,210 people. This means there are about 2,090 inhabitants for every square kilometer of land.
People from Nevers are often called Nivernais (for men) or Nivernaises (for women). Sometimes, they are also called Neversois or Neversoises. The term Nivernais can also refer to people from the entire Nièvre department.
Administration of Nevers
Nevers has been the capital, or préfecture, of the Nièvre department since 1800. It is also the main town for four different areas called Cantons. These cantons help manage local government services.
The four Cantons are:
- Nevers-1: This canton includes part of Nevers and the nearby town of Coulanges-lès-Nevers.
- Nevers-2: This canton covers another part of Nevers and parts of the towns Magny-Cours, Saint-Éloi, and Sermoise-sur-Loire.
- Nevers-3: This canton includes a section of Nevers and parts of the towns Challuy, Gimouille, and Saincaize-Meauce.
- Nevers-4: This canton is made up of another part of Nevers.
Places to Visit in Nevers
Nevers has several interesting historical sites:
- The Nevers Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte) is a large Roman Catholic church. It is named after Saints Cyricus and Julitta.
- The Palais Ducal ("Ducal Palace") was built a long time ago, in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, it houses courts of justice and an important ceramic museum.
- The Porte du Croux is a square tower that dates back to the end of the 14th century. It is a historic gateway to the city.
